Brilliant day of racing for the BMC-Vifit Pro Triathlon Team with a double victory in Challenge Cape Town

Nov 09, 2019

What a fantastic day of racing for the team as both Emma Pallant and Pablo Dapena Gonzalez took the top step in Challenge Cape Town. After strong swims both athletes kept their position in the lead group throughout the entire bike leg, to then make the difference in the closing half marathon. Gonzalez made his move in the opening kilometers and gradually extended his lead, to take the victory in a winning time of 3:46:48. McKenna finished second (NZL; 3:48:14) with Trautman (ZA; 3:49:44) rounding out the podium.

It the women's race Pallant broke away from co-leader Watkinson as soon as she left transition and dominated the run to take her 6th half distance victory of the season. The BMC-Vifit athlete crossed the line in 4:14:51. Watkinson followed in second (ZA; 4:21:20) and Siddall finished in third (GB; 4:24:23).

A very happy Emma Pallant looked back at her performance:"Really happy with it! I kept it controlled on the swim and the bike. The plan was to just stay with the lead and not to overdo on the bike. Because we knew the run was going to be hot and hilly. But I felt really in control on the run and could maintain a very strong pace throughout. I am super happy to finish the last big race of the season on a high. So grateful again for all the team do for us. Thank you!"

Gonzalez had a very eventful week leading up to the race. After his fantastic second place finish at the South American IM70.3 Championship in Buenos Aires last week, he had to cope with a lot of travel and logistical hassle. No wonder the Spanjard was very emotional that he could finish off a challenging week in style:"I am so happy. The whole race went very well. I was first out of the water which set me up really well on the bike. I settled in the lead group of 5 and stayed focused and postioned myself well throughout the entire bike leg. Then onto the run. The run was very hard with 3 hills per lap. But I was able to drop everybody on the first hill of the first lap and was able to gradually increase my lead. The last lap was an absolute joy and almost moved me to tears after such an eventful week. I am over the moon."
